DLF Ltd. was founded in 1963, began developing residential colonies in Delhi, such as Krishna Nagar, in 1949. After the Delhi Development Act in 1957, the state took control of real estate development, leading to restrictions on private real estate. DLF began acquiring land outside the Delhi Development Authority, particularly in Gurgaon, Haryana. Their first landmark project was DLF Qutab Enclave, which has evolved into DLF City, covering over 3,000 acres in Gurgaon. In 1996, the company expanded into group housing projects, Grade A office spaces, organised retail complexes, and DLF Cyber City Gurgaon. In 2012, they started an expressway project and a multilevel parking facility.

 In 2014, DLF issued India's first Commercial Mortgage Backed Security (CMBS) of ₹525 crore. Presently, DLF Cybercity Chennai, Kolkata, Bhubaneswar, and similar enclaves are in operation.
