The Indian Railway Finance Corporation (IRFC) is owned by the Indian Railways, the Ministry of Railways, and the Government of India. It generates funds for expansion and operation through capital markets and borrowings, focusing on covering the majority of the railways' Extra Budgetary Resources (EBR) requirements with competitive prices and conditions. IRFC has funded railway projects and performance improvement initiatives since 2011-12 and is on track to exceed INR 2.20 lakh crore by the end of 2018. The funds will purchase rolling stock and improve infrastructure, with IRFC sponsoring the purchase of 8998 locomotives, 47910 passenger coaches, and 2,14,456 wagons. History of Indian Railway Finance Corporation

Indian Railway Finance Corporation (IRFC) Ltd was established on December 12, 1986. Since 2010, the RBI has designated it as a systemically important non-deposit-taking NBFC, especially an infrastructure financing business (NBFC-IFC). It is a Schedule A Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Railways (MoR), Government of India. Since its foundation in 1986, the firm has been active in raising financing from both local and foreign markets for Indian Railways. It has made a significant contribution to the expansion of Indian Railways and allied businesses, including Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) and IRCON. The history of the Indian Railways stock price has demonstrated significant fluctuations since the listing date. 

Over the years, IRFC has used a variety of financial instruments to raise money. For example:

  • In 1996, it sold deep discount bonds to the public and floated rate notes worth $70 million in offshore markets.
  • In 1998, it issued secured, redeemable, non-cumulative, taxable bonds to LIC with a 15-year maturity.
  • The next year, it issued secured, redeemable, non-cumulative, taxable bonds with Separately Transferable, Redeemable Principal Parts (STRPP).
  • In 2006, it issued floating-rate bonds on the Indian capital market.
  • In 2011, it secured a 15-year foreign currency term loan from the American Family Life Assurance Company of Columbus.
  • In 2020, the IRFC issued $1 billion in bonds under US Regulation S.

In January 2021, IRFC successfully raised ₹4,633 crore from their IPO. The Indian government issued 118 crore equity shares worth ₹3,088 crore and offered to sell 59 crore shares for ₹1,544 crore. IRFC share price today varies depending on the market condition.
