Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. is India's largest electric power transmission and distribution company, owned by Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. The company is involved in transmitting bulk power across various Indian states. It holds and operates 90% of India's national and interregional electricity transmission systems. The company has four main business segments: transmission, consulting, telephony, and the ULDC and RLDC. As of January 31, 2021, the company had 168,140 kilometres of transmission lines and 252 substations.

Company Establishment 

On October 23, 1989, the Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. was incorporated as a public limited company, National Transmission Company Limited. The company was founded on planning, implementing, owning, operating, and maintaining high-voltage transmission lines in the country. The company’s name changed to Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. on October 23, 1992.

As of January 31, 2021, it had an overall conversion capacity of approximately 422430 MVamperes. It is maintained consistently with over 99% availability of this massive transmission network, extending over the country's length and breadth. The company has expanded operations to the telecommunications sector to take advantage of the additional telecommunication capacity of the unified load dispatch centre system of the ULDCs by utilising the country-wide transmission network.

As a Public Sector company

The Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. belongs to the public sector. As of December 31, 2020, the Indian government held a 51.34% stake in the company. In addition to the requirements of ISO 9001:2008 for quality, ISO 14001:2004 for environmental management, and OHSAS 18001:2007 for health and safety management systems, the company has been certified under PAS 99:2006. They shall also be licensed under the SA 8000:2008 social accountability standard for all activities. 

The company has added 8,174 km of OPGW network, seven new substations, 5,450 circuit km of extra high voltage transmission lines, and 43,564 megavolt amps of transformation capacity in FY2022. Large and significant projects that were finished this year include the 765 kV D/C Vindhyachal Pooling Station-Varanasi Transmission Line and Poles 3 and 4 of the HVDC Bipole Link the Western Part (Raigarh in Chhattisgarh) and the Southern Part (Pugalur in Tamil Nadu).

1. For its consistently outstanding contributions to the nation by setting high energy transmission standards, it has been awarded CBIP 2020 as Best Electricity Transmission Utility.
2. Selected by the Great Place to Work Institute, India, as one of India's Best Companies to Work for 2019. 
3. The Indian Society for Training and Development (ISTD) awarded the national award for modern training methods.
4. Dun & Bradstreet Infra Awards 2019 in the category Power Transmission and Dun & Bradstreet Corporate Awards 2019 in the category Best Growth Performance - Power.
