Whirlpool of India Limited was founded on July 9, 1960 as Kelvinator of India Limited. The company was created in conjunction with Kelvinator International Corporation, USA, to produce refrigerators, compressors, and related equipment. In 1974, they developed a plant to produce electrical grade stampings in conjunction with Thermal Refrigeration Limited in the United Kingdom. In 1975, the business opened a contemporary tool room for the production of tools, dies, jigs, and fittings.

In 1976, they constructed a plant to manufacture electromechanical cash registers in conjunction with Gross Cash Registers, UK. Aravalli Svachalit Vahan, Alwar's sick unit, joined the firm on May 26, 1982. In 1985, the firm signed a partnership arrangement with White Consolidated Industries Inc, USA, to produce washing machines. In 1986, they produced a 300-litre 2-door refrigerator for lower and middle-class customers. In addition, they offered a single speed (VIP-1) and three-speed kick-start (VIP-3), as well as two new cash register types.
