S&P BSE India Infrastructure

BSE India INFRA is a thematic index on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) that measures the performance of the domestic infrastructure industry. It comprises 30 stocks selected from the S&P BSE AllCap index, covering 7 sectors; Capital Goods, Power, Transport Services, Oil & Gas, Finance, Utilities, and Housing. 

Launched in 2014, the index has breached 250 levels at ~10.35x P/E multiples since its inception. The index is reconstituted annually in September and rebalanced semi-annually in March and September. It is calculated in INR and USD and is managed by the S&P BSE Index Committee under Asia Index Private Ltd. The index is suitable for benchmarking fund portfolios and launching index funds for liquid and investable exposure to the infrastructure sector.

How is BSE India INFRA Calculated?

This formula is used to calculate the S&P BSE India Infrastructure index value:

Index value = Index Market Value / Divisor

Whereas,

Price * Shares * IWF (Float Factor) * FX rate * AWFi equals the index market value

On the date of rebalancing, the Adjusted Stock Market Value (AWFi) factor is assigned.

Divisor + index value prior to rebalancing / the index value after rebalancing.

The BSE INFRA index is reconstituted every September. The index cap weightings are reviewed semi-annually in March and September. The infrastructure cluster has a 30% cap, while single stocks have a 10% cap. Corporate actions are weighed based on the non-market capitalization approach.

What Criteria are Used to Choose Stocks for BSE India INFRA Inclusion? - H2

Using the S&P Dow Jones equity indices' divisor methodology, the 30 stocks of the S&P BSE India INFRA are weighted based on their modified market capitalization values to determine the BSE India Infrastructure share price. Semi-annual index weight rebalancing is carried out using market capitalization that has been adjusted for floating.

BSE India INFRA Index Eligibility Criteria:

  • Securities must be listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange and domiciled in India.
  • Part of the S&P BSE AllCap index.
  • Form part of infrastructure sub-groups grouped into 5 clusters.
  • Cap stocks to 10 for each infrastructure cluster category.
  • Include only common shares.
  • Have a listing history of at least 6 months.
  • Average daily free float market cap value of at least Rs. 1 billion.
  • Annualized traded value of at least Rs. 200 million.
  • Turnover ratio of at least 10%.
  • Maximum 5 non-trading days in the last 6-month period.
  • Exclude stocks ranked beyond 10 based on average 6-month daily free float market cap.
  • Top 20 stocks included, irrespective of constituent status.
  • Remaining 10 stocks from current constituents ranked 21-40.
