What do large-cap, mid-cap, and small-cap companies mean, and how to identify them?

Large-cap, mid-cap, and small-cap are simply divisions of companies based on market capitalization (that is, the total value of the shares of the company on the market).

● Large-cap companies are the behemoths of the stock market, typically the top 100 publicly listed companies. Large caps are familiar, stable names in the market.

● Mid-cap companies are the ones whose rankings typically fall between 101 to 250 in size. Mid-caps are in the stage of growth, smaller than the large caps, but often faster moving.

● Small-cap companies generally fall below the top 250. Small caps are smaller and more mobile, but they can be the most rewarding because there is often more growth.

To determine the classification of a company, you can look at the SEBI guidelines or consult the NSE/BSE website to find the company market capitalization.
