Bharti Airtel to purchase 23,000 MWh of renewable energy by Q4 FY 23-24 for Nxtra, data center company
On Monday, Bharti Airtel, a telecom service provider, announced that it will buy 23,000 MWh of renewable energy by the end of the fiscal year (Q4 FY 23–24) for its data center company, Nxtra. Airtel will invest in the renewable energy project businesses formed by Continuum Green India Pvt. Ltd. and Vibrant Energy Holdings Pte. Ltd. to power six of Nxtra's Edge data center locations as part of the company's commitment to lower its carbon impact.
A stake in the project company of Continuum Green, which will be supplying green power from solar and wind power projects to its Edge data centers in Madhya Pradesh, would be purchased by Airtel through an open access method. To supply solar power to its Edge data center in Vijayawada, Airtel also entered into a similar share acquisition deal with the project company Vibrant Energy.
The total contracted renewable energy capacity for Nxtra data centers will have surpassed 274,000 MWh with the addition of these additional capacities, and it will be well on its way to establishing itself as the leader in developing green data centers.
To increase its current capacity to over 400 MW in the next years, the company will invest INR 5000 crores. Investments in new facilities have also been made in Kolkata, Hyderabad, Pune, and Mumbai.
By FY2031 (with FY2021 as the base year), Nxtra by Airtel plans to have reduced all of its activities' absolute scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions to zero. It will do this through several initiatives, such as the quick adoption of green energy throughout its operations, the use of energy-efficient processes and infrastructure, and the adoption of sustainable business practices at work.
