About S&P BSE Auto Index

The automotive sector being one of India's most significant industries contributes around 7.1% of the country's GDP. It accounts for 49% of its manufacturing GDP. Automobile stocks are among the most popular choices among investors due to their rapid growth and ability to reflect the nation's economic progress. The S&P BSE Auto index was introduced on August 23, 2004, to represent the costs of businesses that sell transportation equipment.

This index's components are chosen from the BSE 500 index, which includes the top 500 stocks in each of the index's categories. The businesses that BSE has identified are represented in the BSE Auto index for the transportation equipment sector. Real-time calculations are used to determine the BSE Auto share price, which is displayed in both USD and INR. The S&P BSE auto index currently has 15 stocks with a market value of ₹ 717,194.5 million. The index value was calculated based on the base year 1999.

Criteria to Select Stocks for Inclusion in BSE 100

A stock has to meet several standards to be included in the BSE auto index. Below are the prerequisites:

  • Every component of the exchange needs to be included in the BSE 500 index.
  • The average of the float-adjusted market cap over the previous 3 months is used to determine the market cap of the stock. Alternatively, the market cap that has been adjusted for float during the last 3 months is calculated, and is used during the calculation.
  • The equities need to be traded on at least 90% of the trading days 3 months before the date of reference.

Calculation of S&P BSE Auto

The BSE Auto share price is calculated by adding the float-adjusted market caps of each constituent. One needs to divide the result by the market cap of the base year and multiply the result by 100. Here is the formula:

  • BSE Auto Share Price Today = Total Free-Float Market capitalization x 100 / Base Market capitalization (1999)

This calculation method only includes shares available for trading on the stock exchange. It excludes the value of shares that are privately held from the overall market cap.
