NIFTY Smallcap 250 index  is a broad-based index on the NSE that represents the performance of the small-cap segment of the equities market. It is a diversified index of 250 stocks, ranked 251-500 based on full market capitalisation in the NIFTY 500's stocks universe. The index spans 21 sectors, with Financial Services and Capital Goods accounting for a third of the market. FMCG, chemicals, healthcare, IT, and consumer durables are some of the other industries. The index represents over 6% of float-adjusted market capitalisation on NSE, with a weighted average constituent turnover of Rs. 44 crores per day. Launched on April 1, 2016, it has breached levels of 8000 at ~19.6 P/E multiples and is reconstituted semi-annually.

How is NIFTY Smallcap 250 Calculated?

The Nifty Smallcap 250 index value is calculated as follows:

Market capitalisation as of today / (Base market capitalisation * Base Index Value) equals the index value

The NIFTY Smallcap 250 index is calculated semi-annually using data from six months, with January 31 and July 31 of each year serving as the cut-off dates. After providing the market with four weeks' notice, stocks in the NIFTY Smallcap 250 (if any) are replaced on the final trading day of March and September.
