About BSE Telecom Index

Tracking each industry helps identify the overall market trends and hence helps investors monitor the performance of each sector. BSE categorizes all listed stocks into sectors and measures performance. S&P BSE Telecom index is part of such sectoral indices and has various other indices similar to its sector classification.

The BSE Telecom Index tracks the performance and movement of companies in the field of telecom. The sector consists purely of telecommunications companies, and its constituents are selected from BSE AllCap. The BSE Telecommunication share price is calculated and updated at the Bombay Stock Exchange. It reflects the value of various telecom stocks in real-time, thereby serving as a current measure of market performance for them. 

History of BSE Telecom Index

The S&P BSE Telecom index was first introduced on February 25, 2022. It is a real-time updated index and consists of 17 stocks with a total market cap of INR 327,353.59 million. This index has two variants: one in INR and the other in USD. The base date of calculation of the index value is September 18, 2020.

Criteria to Select Stocks for BSE Telecom Index

S&P BSE Telecom index forms part of BSE's suite of sectoral indices. Stocks to this index will be selected from the BSE AllCap index. Therefore, the selection process will also be similar in nature for both. Following are some basic rules of selecting stocks for this index:

  • No single stock would have more than 33% weight in the index.
  • The cumulative weight of the top 3 stocks cannot be more than 63% in total.
  • The weight is then redistributed proportionally to all the other stocks in an index at its excess amount.
