Coal India boosts supply to power plants ahead of festive season
Coal India's (CIL) coal supply to thermal power plants surged nearly 6% to 23.5 million tonnes in the first half of October 2023, in preparation for the festive season. This compares to 22.2 million tonnes supplied during the same period in October 2022. Despite unseasonal rains affecting operations in coal-bearing areas, CIL managed to achieve this growth. The company's total supply for the first 15 days of October 2023 saw a 16% increase compared to the same period in 2022, totaling 28.6 million tonnes.
By October 15th, FY 2024, CIL had provided approximately 319 million tonnes to coal-fired plants, a 12 million tonne increase from the same period in FY 2023. This 4% growth aligns with the current year's annual growth rate. CIL had initially been tasked with supplying 610 million tonnes to power plants for FY 2024, a 4% increase from the previous fiscal year. The company anticipates exceeding this projected target.
Overall, CIL's supplies to all sectors reached 389.3 million tonnes during the same period, marking a 9% growth compared to the previous fiscal year's 356.6 million tonnes. With consistent production efforts, CIL achieved a significant year-on-year growth of 11.6%, producing a cumulative 360 million tonnes by October 15th, FY 2024. This expansion of 37.6 million tonnes surpassed the fiscal year's target growth rate of approximately 11%.
