S&P BSE PSU 

The S&P BSE PSU index is a thematic index on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) that measures the performance of Indian public sector undertakings. It comprises 57 stocks from the S&P BSE 500 index, representing public enterprises across nine sectors. Launched in 2001, it has breached levels of 8,000 at approximately 6.82x P/E multiples. The index is calculated using a float-adjusted, market-cap-weighted method and is reconstituted semi-annually in June and December. Managed by the S&P BSE Index Committee under Asia Index Private Ltd, the index is calculated in INR and USD, with a variant in the form of S&P BSE PSU TR.

How are Stocks Selected for Inclusion in BSE PSU?

BSE PSU Index Eligibility Criteria: 

  • Stocks must be domiciled in India and listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange.
  • Must be part of the S&P BSE 500 index.
  • Must belong to the PSU sector as per the BSE Sector Classification System.
  • Must be owned by 51% or more of central, state, or joint governments.
  • Only common stocks can be included, not DVRs.
  • Companies with a listing history of at least one month must be eligible for inclusion.

How is BSE PSU calculated?

The index value is determined through the following formula:

Index value = Index Market Value / Divisor

Where:

Index Market Value equals Price * Shares * IWF (Float Factor)

Divisor = Market Value divided / Index Value

The BSE PSU index undergoes semi-annual reconstitution in June and December, with the last trading day of April and October serving as the reference date. The updated components take effect on the Monday following the third Friday of June and December. Notably, no new additions are incorporated into the BSE PSU index between these rebalancing periods.
