S&P BSE FMCG Index

FMCG, or Fast-Moving Consumer Goods, are products with a short shelf life that are used daily by consumers. Examples include groceries and toiletries. These fast-moving goods are cost-effective and essential for daily use. The FMCG sector is highly impactful, affecting consumers from all walks of life. To study its performance, the BSE launched the BSE FMCG index in April 2015. This index studies the movement of the FMCG segment, one of the 11 macro-economic indicators. 

The S&P BSE FMCG Index currently has 81 constituents, ranked based on the free-float market capitalization method. The index is rebalanced annually in September, but quarterly reviews are conducted in December, March, and June to accommodate changes. BSE FMCG Index Calculation 

Initially, a stock has to be included in the BSE All Cap index for it to be included in the BSE FMCG index. This implies that each component must be associated with the FMCG industry and meet the standards set by the BSE All Cap index, which comprises prerequisites such as traded values and average turnover.

However, there's a good chance that the leading businesses will make up the majority of the index weightage if the free-float market capitalization method is used to determine the index's value. Consequently, there will be a decrease in the diversity of index data. The BSE FMCG index employs the capped market cap approach to prevent this. Here are the guidelines for capping:

  • A company is limited to a maximum weightage of 33%.
  • The maximum percentage of the index weightage that can be attributed to the top three companies is 63%.
  • If any of the aforementioned requirements are broken, the excess weights are divided proportionately among the uncapped components.
